8.50am to 2.50pm. Our lunch break is from 12.25 to 1.15.
Our canteen is open during the lunch hour. Pupils may purchase a range of hot and cold items. A limited range of snack foods is also on sale.
Children who do not normally go home for lunch are not permitted to leave the grounds at all during the day except for urgent reasons that should be supported by a written request from Parent/Guardian.
Pupils are not permitted to have fish and chips (or similar fast foods) for lunch at school.
All textbooks are supplied free for use during the year. Stationery will be on sale throughout the year at the school (except on the first day). Sales are made at the school office from 8.30 to 8.50am and from 1.10 to 1.25pm.
Messages for pupils can only be taken if of an urgent nature. Similarly, the school telephone is only available for pupils' use in emergencies. Pupils may use the foyer telephone to contact parents after school. Permission is needed from the office staff and there is a charge of 20 cents per call to a landline and 70 cents for a call to a cell phone.
When a pupil is to be absent, parents are asked to telephone the school between 8.30am and 9.15am to let us know. (Tel 939.8216) or leave a message on our Answer phone (Tel 939.8265) after hours. If we have not heard from you by 9.15am, we endeavour to contact you to find out the reason for absence. We are very strict in ensuring that truancy does not occur and that pupils arrive at school safely.
For medical and dental appointments during school hours, permission is always given provided there is verification by an appointment card, letter or phone call.
We accept that occasionally accidental damage will occur. However, in cases of wilful damage, parents will be informed immediately and asked to reimburse the cost of repair or replacement. Lost library books will be charged for.
Common sense suggests that pupils should not bring large amounts of money or expensive equipment to school. MP3 Players/iPods, cameras, games consoles, etc. should be left at home. The school can take no responsibility for the loss of such items. Children of this age group are also renowned for their ability to lose items of clothing. Our lost property overflows by the end of the year with unclaimed garments. Please make sure all clothing is named!
Our school fees (a tax-deductible donation) continue to be the lowest of any Intermediate School in the valley. We achieve this by having an almost 100% payment rate. Fees for 2010 are expected to be:
One pupil - $80.00. Family - $100.00
Technicraft costs are only partly met by government funding. The school provides specialist teaching in 6 subjects. The combined fee, covering all costs, is:
$20 per term. (4 term year) $80 per year.
This fee is compulsory. Most parents combine the total fee payment with stationery purchases at the beginning of the year. We realise, however, that many families nowadays are under great financial pressure. We are only too happy to accept payment in stages throughout the year - please contact Mrs Carrington in the office. Many of our families pay their total account (fees, uniforms, stationery, trips) by Automatic Payment, spread over the year. Contact the office staff for further information.
Early in the year we hold our "Meet the Teacher" evening. However, it is always wise for parents to contact the class teacher immediately regarding concerns. Staff will often contact parents regarding pupils' needs. Mid-year reports are held by combined interview and written report in late June. Final written reports are sent home in the last week of the year.
The majority of students from Naenae Intermediate progress to Naenae College, with whom we have close ties. We also maintain links with, and supply student records to all secondary schools, including Hutt Valley High, Taita College, St Pat's, Sacred Heart, St Oran's, Hutt International, Chilton St James, Wellington Girls', Wellington College, Wellington East and the Upper Hutt and Wainuiomata schools.
Naenae Intermediate's wide-ranging programme equips students well for future years of secondary schooling. Our students have developed a reputation for good work habits, sound study skills and academic and sporting achievement.
Enrolments at secondary schools are carried out during the second and third terms of your child's second year. The Naenae College prospectus is sent automatically to parents of all Year 8 students. Copies of the prospectus for most other secondary schools are held at our school office, or are obtained by phoning the office of the school concerned.
In the event of a major disaster, such as an earthquake, the school has basic routines which are immediately instituted. These include:
On the enrolment form there is a space for you to list adults who are permitted to collect your child from school. Please fill in this section of the form.
"Positive, warm relationships between teachers and students are a feature of the school. It has a welcoming positive tone."
Naenae Intermediate has a positive reporting history with ERO.
