In order to ensure a strong "family feeling" in classes and to ensure that pupils best needs are catered for, we work in composite Year 7 and Year 8 classes. Experience has proved the academic and social gains for pupils in this system.
Classes are grouped together in syndicates (usually 3 classes) under the supervision of a senior teacher. Within each syndicate pupils are grouped according to academic need in various subject areas. Syndicates also work together for such subjects as Physical Education, Music, Drama, Art and Technicraft.
If your child has special academic needs, Naenae Intermediate is well-equipped to cater for them. We have teachers with specialist skills in every subject area, as well as staff with responsibility for such areas as Extension Programmes and NESB (Non English Speaking Background). A phone call to the office will put you in touch with the required person. The school also has a large Special Needs Department to cater for Remedial Reading, Special Class and physically and intellectually disabled pupils. Pupils with social difficulties are assisted through our Guidance programme. The school's philosophy in these areas is simple - if pupils have a need, we do our best to cater for it. As a result of having these "attachments" to our school, all pupils gain the benefit of having extra staff and the opportunity to work alongside pupils less fortunate than themselves.
Our school programmes follow New Zealand National Curriculum Guidelines. We have a strong emphasis on "the basics", as well as a belief in teaching the importance of teaching pupils the skills they will need for life and employment in our nation in the near future. In order to give our pupils these 21st Century skills we have introduced an extensive specialist programme. Students have the opportunity to attend classes in Woodwork, Art, Information & Communications Technology, foods, Drama and Music. We have also introduced instruction in Japanese, French, Spanish German and Maori language for all pupils. Classes for beginner and Extension Samoan and Extension Maori are also offered.
The wider range of subjects offered in Intermediate Schools are well in evidence at Naenae. We give the children the opportunity to be involved in Art (including pottery, painting, lino and screen printing and carving) and Music (singing, instrumental, choral). Sport is an integral part of our Leisure Education programme and covers a high range - badminton, squash, ten-pin bowling, orienteering, gymnastics, golf, roller-blading and skating, self defence, canoeing, swimming and many other minor sports are included as well as the usual major team sports, i.e. soccer, rugby, league, netball, hockey, tennis, cricket, and softball.
Leisure Education also includes a range of "elective" recreational and interest activities each week. This gives our pupils the opportunity to learn new skills and pursue interests. Upwards of twenty options are available during each three to four week cycle, including art & craft activities, cultural & music activities plus extra manual and technicraft lessons.
The school operates a two year cycle of major events designed to provide additional desirable learning experiences. All pupils have the opportunity to be involved in an outdoor education camp, a mid-winter ball and a major musical production during their time at Naenae Intermediate.
