History of Our School

Naenae Intermediate School was opened in 1957 to cater for the rapidly expanding population of the area at that time. The Hutt Valley was becoming a centre for industrial growth and huge housing areas were built to provide homes for the workforce.

The school's initial role was 290 Form 1 (Year 7) pupils with 14 staff but this rose rapidly to over 700 students by 1960. Numbers varied over the years peaking again at just over 600 in the 1980s, dropping off to 400 in 1992 before settling to it's current level of around 400. Students mostly come from our local area but many families from the wider region seek to enrol their children with us. Because of this we currently have an enrolment zone which gives priority to local families.

At present we have over 40 staff members. These include classroom teachers, specialist teachers, special needs staff, extension teachers, support and administrative staff. The school is also the base for special needs work in this part of the region, with a facility for intellectually impaired students and Resource Teachers for Learning and Behaviour placed here.

Much change has taken place in the physical environment of the school since 1957. Improvements to the interior of the buildings have been carried out to meet the needs of our school over the next decade. New classrooms have been built to cater for the roll growth in recent years and to replace a classroom block destroyed by fire in 2000. This provided us with the opportunity to take advantage of the many advances in and knowledge of learning environments for now and into the future. A substantial computer network has been developed, a specialist Information Technology room created and classrooms are being progressively re-modeled to meet changed learning requirements.

In 2009, construction will commence for the development of a new technicraft block with state-of-the-art facilities and up-to-date equipment. This will sufficiently cater for students' needs in today's technologically advanced world.

A well-known feature of the school is the carved mural which frames the stage in our school hall. This magnificent carving was designed and built by our students over a five year period. It tells the story of the Hutt River (Te Awa Kairangi) and is said to be the finest piece of carved art in any New Zealand primary or intermediate school.
