Opening in 2000, the Venture Class was initially located in an office building in the Hutt CBD. In 2003 the Venture Class programme was under threat due to a severe reduction in our school's funding, as a result of an increase in our decile rating. It was decided that it was too valuable a programme to abandon and so the location was moved on site to Room 6. Although Venture Class is now based within the school grounds, a number of community resources are still used to extend the children's learning environment. These include:
The aim of the Venture Class is to facilitate the children's learning through Inquiry Learning and in particular to develop the "Higher Order Thinking Skills" of Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. This is achieved by choosing a main "theme" each term which becomes the basis for much of the students' study; generally culminating in an exhibition, display or some event to showcase the work done during the term. These chosen themes allow for integrated learning opportunities with the students, who are expected to take much of the responsibility for their own learning, setting individual and collective goals, including assessment. The students will evaluate their own learning against these goals. The teacher will also carry out required assessments as part of the school's regular assessment and reporting cycle.
"A major goal of the Venture Class is to set students on the next steps of their journey towards a life time of learning." - Vicki Adam, Venture Class teacher.
